Swedish Death Cleaning

August 5, 2025

Despite it's name, Swedish Death Cleaning is a life-affirming approach to organizing. It's about editing your belongings so your loved ones are not burdened with it after you're gone.

You may have heard of this concept from the Peacock series, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, based on the 2018 book by Margareta Magnusson.

A few helpful tips to get started:

  • Let Go of the Guilt: Many people feel that getting rid of their parents' belongings means they are getting rid of them, but that is not true. Keep only whats meaningful or useful.
  • Edit a Little Each Day: Don't overwhelm yourself, start small with a kitchen drawer or bookshelf. A little bit adds up & if you start now, there is no rush.
  • Focus on the Goal: If you are just organizing & not letting go of items, take a moment to reflect, downsizing requires you to be realistic & it can be emotional.
  • Give your Stuff a Second Life: Thoughtfully donate or repurpose items before tossing them.
  • Embrace a Time for Change: A move or major life event may be the perfect time to get organized.
